Picking up the Pieces: Vicki’s Story

Vicki was hesitant to sign up for meal delivery. Her parents participated in another Meals on Wheels program many years ago in another state, and the food wasn’t very good. When she broke her leg, her social worker encouraged her to give Coal Creek Meals on Wheels a try. “I couldn’t work – I couldn’t move. I couldn’t prepare meals for myself at all.”

Vicki has been a vegetarian for 50 years and was pleasantly surprised to learn that CCMOW can accommodate her dietary needs, a capacity made possible by our dedicated supporters. “Because of that, I was deeply appreciative and delighted. It takes such an edge off to have that meal.”

Vicki is a university professor and has been able to start working again as she continues to heal. “I was able to pick up the pieces of my life and start getting back into my career again. Being able to have those meals is everything.”

For Vicki, receiving meal deliveries has brought back some of that normalcy – not just through the regular access to fresh, vegetarian meals, but also through the daily interactions she has with her delivery drivers.

“It’s made a big difference in my quality of life,” Vicki shared. She continues to heal and build strength, and she has hopes of being back on her paddleboard this summer.
