Elizabeth’s Story: Nourishment, Connection, and the Comfort of Community

Elizabeth is 77 and has lived in her Louisville home for many years. When her husband, Floyd, entered hospice care, their daughter Kelli suddenly found herself navigating how best to support her parents through an incredibly challenging time. Ensuring they had consistent access to healthy meals quickly became a priority.

That’s when Kelli discovered Coal Creek Meals on Wheels. What began as a way to help her parents stay nourished soon grew into something much more meaningful for the whole family.

“For me, it's so reassuring to know that she is going to receive a hot, nutritious meal several times each week,” Kelli shared. “She looks forward to the volunteers every week and loves visiting with them. It has been such a gift.”

The meals—and the friendly faces delivering them—became a source of comfort during Floyd’s final months. And after his passing, that support continued to play an important role in Elizabeth’s life. Living alone for the first time in years, she found that the social connection at the door mattered just as much as the food itself.

Receiving meals allows Elizabeth to continue living independently in the home she cherishes, without having to worry about shopping or cooking. She enjoys everything on the menu—especially the cookies, which are homemade with love in the CCMOW kitchen.

For Elizabeth, Meals on Wheels has become a steady source of connection and reassurance. And for Kelli, it’s comforting to know that her mom is not only receiving nutritious meals, but also warm conversation, a friendly check-in, and the knowledge that she’s surrounded by a caring community.

Stories like Elizabeth’s are made possible because of people who care—neighbors, volunteers, donors, and everyone who believes in supporting our neighbors. Together, we help ensure that independence, dignity, and connection remain within reach for all.
