A Community of Care: Isabel’s Story

Providing for her family had become increasingly challenging for Isabel, a single mother in Louisville living with a disability. After receiving the diagnosis of a second brain tumor, she decided to reach out to Coal Creek Meals on Wheels.

Initially hesitant because of her age —only in her 50s—Isabel was relieved to discover that CCMOW serves anyone in the community who needs support, regardless of age or income. Unable to qualify for federal food assistance benefits, she was overjoyed when she discovered that Coal Creek Meals On Wheels not only provides hot, nutritious meals daily, but also extends care to her animals through the Plates for Pets program. This was a lifeline for her family, which includes two rescue companions—a senior dog and a large, affectionate cat.

For Isabel, the program has been much more than just meal delivery— it has brought her hope and human connection.

"The special touch of cards from the children has been absolutely adorable and heartwarming," Isabel shared, expressing her appreciation for the creativity of CCMOW’s youngest volunteers. “You lose connection,” she said, reflecting on her own children growing up and becoming more independent. The regular visits from CCMOW’s compassionate volunteers have helped bridge that gap. “The volunteers who deliver the meals are amazing,” she said.

Receiving weekday hot meals and frozen meals for the weekends has eased Isabel’s financial burden, allowing her to afford essentials like new shoes for herself and her children—something that felt out of reach when struggling with food insecurity. With this relief, Isabel has started thinking about longer-term needs and plans for her family.

Her gratitude for her community of support shines through in her heartfelt words:

"I appreciate each and every one of you who keeps this program going."
